The Sports Wasteland

This is it. The most boring time of the year for sports fans. The SPORTS WASTELAND. The bleak period of time between the Superbowl and the start of March Madness.

This the time of year where we fill the void in our lives by doing all the things we have been putting off all year. We clean the garage. We finally take down the Christmas lights. We check the expiration dates on all that stuff in the back of the fridge. We do anything we can to keep ourselves busy, because there is a serious lack of compelling sporting events on television right now.

ESPN takes this opportunity to bring us wonderful events such as Poker tournaments, Billiards championships, Bowling competitions, and arm wrestling. Even the USA network is alters its schedule in order to bring us the annual Westminster Dog Show live for 2 consecutive nights. Boredom is contagious, it seems.

Baseball season is still weeks away. The NFL draft is months away. The NBA and NHL are have not yet started the final push towards the playoffs. Arena Football season is 18 days away. Even NASCAR is still a week away from its first real race of the season, the Daytona 500.

Right now the only relevant sporting events are the NCAA basketball games, as the teams fight for thier positions in the March Madness tourneyment. The bracket selection is still a couple weeks away.

This is a strange time of year. Its like an offseason for the entire sports world. But rather than mourning the absense of sports that entertain us, we should embrace this strange phenomenon of the sports calander. It makes us that much more appreciative of the real sporting events when they return.
