Eli Manning will play in the Superbowl this year. Hell has frozen over it seems. Somehow the Giants managed to survive the playoffs despite multiple underwhelming performances.
Rumors of a pending historic upset are swirling in Vegas. Addicted gamblers are selling thier cars to place thier money on Eli Manning. The word Underdog exists for a reason. And Miracles do happen in sports (the US beat Russia in hockey way back in 1980, the famous 'Miracle on Ice.')
A Giants letdown has happened before. The Giants managed to sneak into Superhbowl XXXV (thats #35, for those of us educated in public schools.) The end result was a 34-7 victory for the Ravens, despite having Trent Dilfer at QB. (For the record, Dilfer was 12-25 in that game, with a 36 yard touchdown pass. Ray Lewis was the game MVP, and the GIants returned home completely humiliated.)
Kerry Collins finished Superbowl XXXV with 112 yards, was 15 for 39 passing on the day, and threw four interceptions. The lone Giants touchdown came on a kickoff return by Ron Dixon (the Ravens' Jermaine Lewis scored on the following kickoff, thus ending the Giants' celebration.) Surely Eli Manning will find a way to put up better numbers then his predecesor?
Last year, Eli's brother Payton won the Superbowl by going 25-38 with 247 yards and one TD against a very talented Bears Defense. New York fans are praying that there is still some magic left in the Manning Magic Lamp.
For the past 3 seasons, critics have questioned Eli's ability, his intellect, his talent, the depth of the family gene pool, and his manhood. But he got to the Superbowl in less than half the time it took Payton. And nobody ever doubted the abilities of the older brother. But nobody is giving Eli much of a chance in this game.
The sad truth of the matter is that the Giants must play the Patriots. And New England has been literally unstoppable this season. The Giants failed to defeat the Patriots last month in their season finale, and the Patriots will be playing for much more than just a perfect season this time. They will be playing for another Lombardi trophy, the greatest prize in all of sports.
Eli is prone to mistakes during a game. And in this game, one mistake will mean disaster. After this game is over, Eli Manning will be forever known as the biggest disaster in Superbowl history, or the greatest overachiecer ever.
Sometimes the Underdog wins. Nobody predicted Buster Douglas would knock out Mike Tyson in Japan, but it happened. But Eli is no Buster Douglas. We will not see any parades in New York in February.
